HINNEH – Biblical Hebrew the Practical Way

Important Note: To enjoy the recorded lessons, you must purchase the HINNEH textbook.
Buying the physical book rather than the digital version is highly recommended.

Just like there are many translations of the Hebrew Bible, there are also many textbooks for learning Biblical Hebrew. But there’s only one that gets the job done in the most practical way. Meet the amazing textbook that my lessons are based on. It’s the textbook by the Biblical Hebrew teacher Rachel Halabe, and it’s called HINNEH – Biblical Hebrew the Practical Way

The Tool Box includes frequently occurring biblical vocabulary lists (nouns, prepositions, verbs) complete with pronominal suffixes, as well as detailed verb paradigms parsing charts (nouns, prepositions, verbs), and more. The 2017 new revised E-Tool Box is color coded, and is now available as either part of the Hinneh set or separately.

Volume Bet presents the infinitives, imperative and participles of the Qal stem, followed by the remaining verb stems in all their forms and root groups.

Volume Aleph  presents those basic grammatical subjects which are not conditioned by the verb, followed by the prefix and suffix verb forms of the Qal stem in the various root groups.

 Recommendations for HINNEH

… The strengths of this textbook are its logical organization, straightforward explanations, relevant and copious biblical examples, useful charts and illustrations, and interesting exercises employing biblical texts aimed at recognition and translation skills. Hinneh: Biblical Hebrew the Practical Way deserves consideration as a possible adoption for class, and for some instructors it may well become the textbook of choice.

Michael Graves, Review of Biblical Literature, July 4, 2019

… From the very outset, one is struck by the attention to the student’s learning experience and not to listing grammatical rules in a formulaic way. In Hinneh, Halabe is after the effective learning of, and appreciation for, Biblical Hebrew language and texts….

… she models a better pedagogical practice than the old standard grammars…

… Hinneh is a welcome addition to the existing Biblical Hebrew grammars and will no doubt prove its usefulness in the classroom and on the reference bookshelf alike.

Kurtis Peters, The Expository Times 124/11, August 2013

If you’re considering the digital version of the textbook, I want to highlight a few points. While the digital option may be cheaper, I still recommend purchasing the physical textbook. The digital version is not a downloadable PDF and cannot be saved to your computer. Additionally, the best way to study with this book is to have a physical copy, where you can write directly, answer exercises, and add handwritten notes.

Again, I do not receive any royalties for recommending this book; my goal is to ensure you have the best possible tools for learning Biblical Hebrew.
